LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORS OF SPAMA

What did the Kings bring to the pets (animals) of la Safor? The absence of a collection service, and the intention of all the mancomunidad (local council group) politicians, that this service will return to a “dog’s home”, history repeats itself, this time, it is not called La Pinada, it is called Alpe de Sollana residence, breeders and without a permit or licence for the collection of abandoned or lost animals service . (Considered by many as one of the biggest extermination Camps in the Valencian community). The first Council that has apparently contracted this service is the Council of Real de Gandia, according to their Mayoress’ declaration.

Against euthanasia zero. and the almost absolute protection practiced by the Gandia Council, we are finding villages in la Safor that after three years with the same principles of negotiation with the Animal Protection and environment Safor ,now decide to go over to 100% euthanasia (all the animals, will be killed).

How did we arrive to this? The Protectora has, over the last few years, collected 2000 animals from the mancomunidad, finding homes for the majority, others are still at the centre, three years after they were collected. 95% of the animals collected have already been sterilized, in order to avoid the future abandonment of puppies. From the time that we began the collection service, we have tried to make people aware of the necessity to be responsible when having an animal, of the importance of animal identification, of sterilization, of the obligation of abiding with the protection of animals laws. Mission impossible! because the majority of the municipal councillors are only interested in keeping the neighbours happy and try, when people want to get rid of their animals, they call the Protectora and pass these animals off as strays, instead of making these people think again, and understand the suffering that the animals go through when they are abandoned, to make them responsible, and not flagrantly break the law that protects the animals, they connive in this.

In July 2009, this Society, requested a meeting with the mancomunidad, the meeting took place on the 29th. of September, we informed them at that time, that the situation had become unsustainable, that the sanctions for abandonment or physical abuse, are not being actioned. That there are no awareness campaigns against abandonment, but rather to the contrary. That the papers to be able to give an abandoned animal in adoption, which has a microchip, are not being actioned, therefore, these dogs can not have a new owner, no matter how much someone may want to give them a new home. At this meeting, we denounced the previous agreement. During these last three years, on various occasions, we offered our services, to go to the local markets, and inform, and make the public aware of the problem caused by the abandonment of animals. All in vane!

On the 1st. of December, we presented a proposal of covenant, and on the 28th. they called us, and without a comment or any kind of negotiation, we were told that it was not in their interest that the Protectora would collect the abandoned animals.

The Councils have began 2010 without the animal Collection service, they haven’t even informed their local police, they were told by this Society, it is clear that the councils are not interested in the animals that are on the streets, it is their obligation to be responsible for them. Do they call this a good municipal arrangement?

Further, the councils of la Safor are now in debt to the Protectora 54,562 Euros as of today. , This Protectora has been emergency collecting (out of hours, at night, and on holidays etc.) without any extra charges for the Councils, injured animals, run over animals and puppies. even though the incineration and collection services carried out out of hours, are still pending payment, in some cases since 2007, such as 190€ from the Council of Simat, Real de Gandia 100 €, Palmera 50€, and the laughable amount of 15€ from the Council of Piles. Breaking thus the principle of good will. The Councils which owe the most to SPAMA since 2007 are, Tabernes 11500€, La Font 9700€, Piles 7690€, El Real de Gandia 4044€, Xeresa 4335€, Xeraco 2006€, Guardamar 1319€, Bellreguart 1233€, Villalonga owes from long before 8000€ and a long list of small amounts that reach 54,562€. It is not Spama, it`s members, helpers and the people that most care for the animals that should bear the bad negotiation, the lack of interest and general stupidity and indifference of many Councils.

They forget that this is not the last word, that we will not sit still, we're going to do battle on every front, we will report every case of abuse being committed and we will look at who lacks in the defense of animal rights.

Margaret the owner of Barking Barxeta has written the following letter to me. Our own 3 dogs had a very enjoyable stay their a few weeks ago and the bonus is the dogs get exercised.....

" Dear Cris
I have often read in the paper of the good work that you and your colleagues do at S.P.A.M.A.

You like me have a love of our four legged friends the love that they give is unconditional.

I have therefore decided to offer a special discount rate for all the people that have adopted a dog from S.P.A.M.A .to say thank you for giving a dog a family. I have many satisfied friends (I say friends not clients because that's what they become), who use my kennels and all the dogs go home happy, healthy and contented. I have many testimonials to verify this.
